The Garioch v Mackie Derby did not disappoint and what a game of rugby from both teams!
Gareththedefencecoach and Dustythefitnesspainmaster started the squad off with
some warm up activities to get those pulse rates up and muscles stretched off for the pending game ahead.
Next up the players were tested to see if they could go forwards, stay connected and move the rugby ball into space. There were some beautiful long reaches, rotated shoulders and pointed fingers.
Andywackysocks2 then had them getting their rucking brains switched on with an activity that worked the toes, heels, head, hands, win the space and compete for the rugby ball at the ruck breakdown.
The squad were then given their playing tops, squad photos whilst they were still clean and then took a knee for the pre-match chat.
The coaches were looking for straight running, win the space at the ruck and plenty of support play.
The players sorted out the attack and defence captains and got the famous Mackie chant ringing out across the playing areas.
Both teams in defence got back into the game by getting back on their feet, became the threat by manipulating the spaces and kept the tackles low. Mackie however competed more effectively for the ball at the ruck and the Garioch coaching squad commented how quick and good the Mackie players were at this and so Garioch were unable to get the ball back on numerous times throughout the game.
Both teams in attack were able to beat the defences by finding the best spaces around and behind the defences, stressed defenders with evasive footwork, keep continuity with awesome offloads, kicks and quick rucks. Mackie however had greater rugby speed by getting into position early (rucking) and moving the ball away quickly as they too stayed connected allowing the rugby ball get to the ball carrier quickly.
All the coaches could see and hear all the Mackie players using their rugby skills as there was plenty of scanning, talking and listening going on which were backed up by fierce contests for the rugby ball at the breakdowns, plenty of going forwards, continuity of phases of play and intense pressure in attack and defence.
Final score was Garioch 5 : Mackie 9.
Players from both teams showed plenty of SCOTS, opportunities to LEARN and identify any GASPS for their future rugby development.
Thanks to our hosts for allowing us all to be part of what was a truly exciting, high octane game of rugby.
Thanks also to the parents/carers for getting the players to the game and being our positive pitchside supporters. (The players might not say it out loud but they like it when you are there especially when they rise t the occasion and show how well they have progressed from game to game).
Remember to ask yourself what is the one you need to stop doing and the one thing you need to start doing to improve your rugby skills?
Toes, heels, head, handsTASTIC Peeps!
